As a parent of a child of compulsory school age (that is, from the age of 4 to the age of 15), you have a duty to make sure your child receives an efficient full-time education.

This is education "which, in the opinion of the Director of Education is suitable to the child’s age, ability and aptitude" (sec 50, Education and Training Act 1974). The law says this education must be achieved either by regular attendance at school "or otherwise".

So if you want to educate your child at home, you have to inform the Director of Education and Training of your intention to do this and you need to be able to show that the education will be suitable. The contact details of the Director are:
